The spectral capabilities that the Medipix3 chip provides are being explored in the domain of X-ray CT imaging. The aim is to realise a system that by using advanced algorithms is capable of online adaption of the data taking strategy thereby limiting the required dose while still obtaining elemental identification of the materials of the object under study. The example below shows a sample consisting of a Perspex rod wrapped with a copper foil and cadmium foil. One can clearly see that the various materials are identified unambiguously; blue – plastic, red – cooper and green - cadmium.

This project, called Flexray, is done in collaboration with Nikhef’s neighbouring institute CWI for Mathematics and Informatics and the Nikhef spin-off company Amsterdam Scientific Instruments and the Belgium company XRE.
